TEHRAN (IQNA) – Hussein Fadhil al-Hulw, an Arab scholar, in an article has enumerated some of the cases in which the content of some verses of the Quran about plants’ growth is proven with modern science.

Growth of plants

Excerpts from the article are as follows: Verse 99 of Surah Al-An’am talks about the growth of plants: “It is He who has sent water down from the sky to let all kinds of plants grow; the vegetables with accumulated grains; palm-trees from which appear clusters of dates within easy reach; vineyards, olive groves, and pomegranates of all types. See the fruits when they are growing and when they are ripe. This, too, is evidence (of the existence of God) for those who believe.”

The fact that water is the fundamental substance for the growth of all plants is amazing. When it rains, the water mixes with dirt and attraction and repulsion forces are formed between the tiny particles of water and dirt. As a result, the dirt increases in volume. This is a scientific fact that we know today but no one knew when the Quran was revealed.

In another verse, the Quran says: “You may see the earth as a barren land, but when we send rain, it starts to stir and swell and produce various pairs of attractive herbs.” (Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 5)

In dry land movement never stops. Even particles in dirt move although their movement is weak. When water reaches dry dirt, it is stored there for a long time to quest plants’ thirst.

This verse talks about the stages of a plant’s germination. It begins with raining, then water mixes with dirt’s particles and they begin vibration, the result of which is increase in dirt’s volume.

Then the seeds in dirt begin attracting water and growing, which is the beginning of germination. The Holy Quran has described these stages in three words in this verse.
